About NID

NID Design Aptitude Test is a means through which aspirants are shortlisted for admission in UG and PG design courses offered at the prestigious National Institute Design (NID) campuses. Candidates need to clear two NID admission tests in order to be eligible for admission in Bachelor of Design (BDes) and Master of Design (MDes) courses offered at its campuses. Earlier, NID offered admission for its five campuses through NID entrance exam. In 2019, two more NID campuses, that is, NID Bhopal and NID Jorhat were added to the list wherein admission was offered in GDPD course on the basis of NID admission test.

Application Process

Before proceeding to fill application form, candidates must go through the instructions given below:

  • Candidates have to register online before filling the online application form.
  • The application form has been released on 9th January 2021.
  • Candidates are eligible to fill the NID 2021 application form till 17th February 2021. 
  • Candidates must have to upload the scanned photograph & signature.
  • Application correction has been started from 21st to 23rd February 2021 through online mode.
  • Reserve category candidates have to upload their relevant category certificate.
  • Take printout of the filled application form and keep it safe for further procedure.

Eligibility Criteria

NID Entrance Exam Eligibility Criteria for UG Admissions 2021

BDes course offered at NID campuses is of four years duration. The eligibility criteria for NID entrance exam for BDes course admissions states that candidates who have cleared or who will be appearing for their higher secondary (10+2) qualifying examination from any stream (ScienceHumanities, Commerce, etc.) from any recognised board such as CBSE, IBICSE or their equivalent in the year 2020-2021 can apply for the exam.

NID BDes Admissions 2021: Qualifying exams

The minimum educational qualifications that candidates need to meet in order to be eligible to appear for NID entrance exam 2021 are as mentioned below:

  • Final examination of the 10+2 system under a central or state board recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
  • Intermediate or two-year pre-university examination under a board or university recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
  • Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.
  • Senior secondary school examination under the National Institute of Open Schooling, with a minimum of five subjects.
  • Any public school, board or university examination completed in India or in any foreign country recognised as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU)
  • HSC vocational examination.
  • General Certificate Education (GCE) examination at the Advanced (A) level taken in London, Cambridge, or Sri Lanka.
  • High School Certificate Examination from Cambridge University or an International Baccalaureate diploma from the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.
  • AICTE approved three-year full-time Diploma after Class X offered by Board of Technical Education of any state in India or Union Territories as mentioned on http://www.aicte-india.org/statisticbote.php.
  • Candidates who have completed final examinations for Class XII (or equivalent) outside India or from a board not specified above should produce a certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) confirming that the examination they have passed is equivalent to the Class XII examination conducted in India.

NID Admissions 2021: Age Limit for BDes

Candidates can go through the upper age limit criteria that they need to meet in order to be eligible to take NID entrance exam 2021.

NID Entrance Exam Eligibility Criteria for PG Admissions 2021

Candidates must possess any one of the below-mentioned minimum educational qualification in order to fulfill the eligibility criteria for MDes programmes offered at different NID campuses:

  • Bachelor’s degree of minimum four-year duration in any discipline from a recognised university or college. However, candidates must (have passed/ have appeared for/ be appearing for) the bachelor degree exams before July/ August 2021. 

OR

  • Bachelor’s degree of minimum three-year duration in any discipline from a recognised university or college. ( Candidates must have passed the 3 year Bachelor degree examinations by 2020. Those applications were in the final academic year 2019-2020 and whose examinations were not conducted in 2020, due to the pandemic situation prevailing in the country can also apply).

OR

  • Full-time diploma of minimum four-year duration in Design/ Fine Arts/ Applied Arts/ Architecture passed from a recognised university or college after clearing Class XII. However, candidates must (have passed/ have appeared for/ be appearing for) the diploma exams before July/ August 2021.

NID Admissions 2021: Age Limit for MDes

Candidates can go through the upper age limit criteria that they need to meet in order to be eligible to take NID entrance exam 2021.

Note: Foreign citizens (candidates holding citizenship of any country other than India) are eligible to apply for NID entrance exam 2021 only under the overseas category, provided they fulfil all the eligibility criteria.

Exam Syllabus and Pattern

NID Exam is held in two stages. The first stage is the preliminary exam. The exam will comprise of 2 papers. Paper 1 will comprise of 70 marks questions of objective type and Paper 2 will comprise of 30 marks questions of subjective type. There will be no negative marking.

The stage 2 is the main examination which will be conducted for those students who clear the 1st stage. The stage II examination will be based on practical tests including sketching/ drawing, handicraft models, group discussions as well as presentations. This examination will carry a total of 100 marks. The test will be conducted in English medium only.

There is now a fixed syllabus outlined by the NID, the analysis of key words under the syllabus section of the notification and previous year question paper shows that following topics are considered as main ones for stage one and stage two exam.

The topics mentioned above forms the core of the NID exam syllabus and cover over 90% of the questions in both stages of the exam.

FAQs

Aspirants need to appear for NID entrance exam which comprises of two admission rounds, that is, NID DAT Prelims and NID DAT Mains. Candidates who clear NID DAT Prelims are only allowed to appear for NID DAT Mains.

NID DAT Prelims is the shortlisting round for NID admissions. NID DAT Prelims comprises of a written entrance exam that candidates need to appear for and clear in order to be eligible for NID DAT Mains.

Graduation in any discipline from a recognised University or any equivalent qualification recognised as such by the Central Government. Candidate having integrated dual degree(IDD) certificate should ensure that the date of passing the IDD is on or before 01.01.2018

NID DAT Mains is the final admission round for NID admissions. NID DAT Mains consists of a Studio Test and Interview round that candidates need to clear in order to secure admission in design courses offered at NID campuses.

Candidates are informed that the cutoff for NID admissions varies from course to course.

Candidates need to have a prep strategy in place when appearing for NID DAT. NID entrance exam comprises of objective as well as subjective questions. Candidates who clear this admission round then need to appear for NID DAT Mains which is the material handling round for NID admissions.

The statistics for the number of students who took NID Entrance Exam 2020 has not been released. However, in 2019, a total of 21,032 students applied for NID DAT. Data shows that more females apply for NID Entrance Exam as compared to male candidates. In 2019, 13,891 female candidates applied for the design entrance exam as compared to 7,933 male aspirants.

Total seats have increased for NID admissions 2021. Seats on offer in BDes courses through NID entrance exam is 125 for admissions 2021-22. Apart from this number, overseas candidates are offered 19 seats for admission in BDes course, this year. On the other hand, candidates can secure admission to fill 347 seats in MDes programmes at NID campuses. Apart from this number, some seats are also reserved for overseas (supernumerary) candidates.

National Institute of Design (NID) has seven campuses. Aspirants can secure admission in BDes courses at NID Ahmedabad whereas MDes courses are available for admission at NID Ahmedabad, NID Gandhinagar and NID Bengaluru.

NID entrance exam consists of two admissions tests – NID DAT Prelims and NID DAT Mains. Candidates are informed that NID DAT Prelims is a written entrance exam whereas NID DAT Mains comprises of a studio test and interview round. In NID DAT Prelims, candidates need to attempt both objectives as well as subjective questions.

NID fee to be paid by candidates for BDes course (without hostel facilities) is Rs 1,51,050. MDes course fee to be paid by Indian nationals is Rs 1,75,580.
